A Small Study Found That Vitamin D May Be Helpful In Fibromyalgia Pain
May 29, 2015 - Orlando, FL -- Pain is one thing that is usually experienced by fibromyalgia patients. Many of these patients resort to a wide variety of treatments just to improve their overall condition. However, it seems that a very simple remedy can help them reduce their pain.
A small study found that vitamin D may be helpful in fibromyalgia pain. According to the study published in the journal called Pain, fibromyalgia patients who suffer from vitamin D deficiency or have low levels of vitamin D experienced a slight decrease in pain after taking vitamin D supplements. However, symptoms aside from pain remained largely unchanged.
"Fibromyalgia can cause widespread, chronic pain accompanied by other symptoms such as poor sleep, fatigue and mood changes. There are many medications that are used to treat it, but it seems that it only works for half of the patients," said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O'Sullivan.
In a study, 30 fibromyalgia patients were given vitamin D supplements. They were divided into two groups; one was given the supplement and the other was given a placebo. It was found that individuals who received the treatment experienced a 20 percent decrease in pain while the placebo remained unchanged.
However, it is also important to note that there was no improvement in other symptoms such as anxiety, depression, nausea, headache and indigestion. The researchers of the study also made sure that the subjects did not have any other possible cause of pain such as arthritis.
Jeffrey M. Thompson, M.D., associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic, stated that vitamin D may be helpful, but there has not been any evidence that validated the ability of vitamin D to ease chronic pain. He also added that those who are vitamin D deficient should take supplements as it can be extremely helpful to their bone and muscle health.
"Health professionals also believe that even if vitamin D supplements help ease pain, they won't replace medications that are formulated to treat fibromyalgia," added O‘Sullivan.
Properly addressing the root cause of pain is believed to be one of the techniques in improving one's condition. Arthritis patients, for instance, often suffer from pain due to the inflammation caused by arthritis. Many of these patients do not just use NSAIDs, or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, but also natural alternatives such as curcumin supplements.
Curcumin contains high levels of powerful anti-inflammatory properties. What makes this even more interesting is that many of the arthritis sufferers who use curcumin claimed they experienced significant pain relief (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
