New Market Study Published: Internet Retailing in Italy

In 2012, internet retailing saw substantial growth of 23%, to EUR3.8 billion. During the last 12 months, thanks to the increasing availability of Wi-Fi and mobile connections, Italian consumers have been increasingly shifting purchases of specific items like apparel or electronics towards the e-commerce channel.

Competitive Landscape

eBay leads the category with over 20% in value share while Amazon positioned second in internet retailing in 2012, with an 10% market share. Although Amazon only entered the Italian market in 2010, it has increased its share rapidly despite the difficult economic environment. Cross merchandising, coupled with the rapid deliveries and the brand recognition that acts as a guarantee for quality of products and safety of payments have supported its position. During 2012, the first warehouse located in Piacenza, North of Italy, worked at its full capacity, and has proven of great help in the company's worldwide strategy of shortening delivery times to one day. The clean look of the website, which makes product search easier, as well as cross merchandising that suggests to customers other products to go with the product they look for, have been successful in increasing the Italian customer base. Amazon is looking at increasing its market share in sales of luxury and branded products.
