Pet Welfare Organization Goes “MASH-style” for Large Dogs

SNAP Offers “Large Dog” Specialty Spay/Neuter Clinic at Affordable Rates

San Diego, CA – The Spay Neuter Action Project (or SNAP), the first organization in San Diego County to provide programs to solve the tragic outcomes of pet overpopulation, announces its “Large Dog” specialty spay/neuter clinic on Saturday, August 26, at Sweetwater High School in National City.

SNAP is a registered non-profit organization that was established in 1990, to “clear the shelters” through preventive measures, by reducing the number of unwanted pets from entering the system in the first place.  They began the process by publishing the very first referral guide of affordable spay/neuter providers in San Diego County, which quickly became the “go to” resource for other animal groups, large and small, formal and informal.  SNAP became an actual affordable spay/neuter provider in 2003, to ramp up efforts in the ongoing battle against pet overpopulation, by bringing services into primarily lower-income neighborhoods aboard the “Neuter Scooter” surgical bus.  An average of 500 surgeries are performed each month by fully trained and State licensed veterinarians and support staff, in the hospital-grade operating suite located inside the bus.  Over 55,000 combined cats and dogs have been fixed to date!

Why the need for specialty clinics?  Since the Neuter Scooter only has four oversized recovery kennels out of 27 inside the bus, only four large dogs (40-80 pounds) can be fixed per clinic.  These premium spots are booked months in advance by income-challenged pet owners, since the cost to fix a large dog in a traditional veterinary setting, in San Diego County, is over $500.  To make sure that more large dogs can be helped, SNAP holds no less than three “Large Dog” specialty clinics each year.  “The ability to fix more dogs in the heavier weight class, with emphasis on Pit Bulls who rank first as most euthanized breed in City and County-run shelters, provide more chances for large dog owners to receive basic pet care at an affordable rate, while at the same time, reducing the number of shelter intakes,” said Dorell Sackett, Executive Director of SNAP.  Minimum requirements for all surgeries on the Neuter Scooter is 2 months/2 pounds.

The second clinic of the year scheduled for August 26, will be held “MASH-style” for up to 30 large dogs.  Surgeries will take place inside the bus then patients will be transferred to extra-large recovery kennels inside the school gymnasium monitored by SNAP medical staff. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to have Councilmember Mona Rios on hand, to thank pet owners in her District for taking the important step to spay and neuter.  It’s a great show of community support that will mean a lot to them as well as us,” added Ms. Sackett.  The clinic is made possible through sponsorship by the Ethel Frends Charitable Foundation, members of the Sweetwater High School Animal Care Club, and volunteers through Wagging Dog Rescue.  Doors will open at 8:00 am.
