Research Study Finds Curcumin As Effective As An Anti-Depressant Drug

Orlando, FL– September 10, 2015 – Depression is considered to be one of the most common mental disorders in the United States. Individuals who are depressed often experience symptoms such as loss of pleasure or interest, and problems with concentration, energy, self-image, eating, and sleeping. While anti-depressant drugs are popular, a natural remedy is starting to catch the interest of researchers, and even sufferers.

One research study finds curcumin as effective as an anti-depressant drug. Curcumin is an active ingredient of an ancient spice called turmeric, which has long been used in the kitchen and for medicinal purposes. Curcumin is believed to have high levels of therapeutic substances such as anti-oxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

“Today, an increasing number of people are using curcumin supplements to combat a wide variety of conditions, including psychological disorders,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

A study conducted by the researchers from the Department of Pharmacology of Government Medical College compared the effects of curcumin and a popular antidepressant drug. They aimed at knowing whether the natural alternative was as effective as the drug in treating depressive disorder. It has also been noted that turmeric use does not cause side effects that can be found in the antidepressant drug. The study has 60 participants who suffered from major depressive disorder or MDD.

Turmeric is a perennial plant that comes from the ginger family. It is widely used in Indian cuisine, and popularized by its key ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin is believed to be an effective remedy for a wide variety of conditions such as liver ailments, stomach problems, and conditions that are associated with inflammation.

It was found that the natural alternative was well tolerated by the participants. It further revealed that it can be an effective and safe modality for treatment in individuals suffering from MDD, and who don’t suffer from other psychotic disorders. The randomized and controlled clinical trial demonstrated the efficacy of curcumin in helping people with serious depression. It was also found that curcumin could potentially be even more effective than the antidepressant drug and did not cause side effects.

Anti-depressant drugs do not cure the mental disorder, and instead they only mask its symptoms. Experts recommend the use of natural alternatives in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle. A holistic approach is believed to be a better alternative than using pharmaceutical drugs.

Curcumin supplements that contain a black pepper extract called BioPerine are highly recommended by experts. This black pepper extract is believed to increase the bioavailability of curcumin, and improve its absorption inside the body (amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
