Festival Cinema Invisible Presents “Silenced Sounds – Music and Censorship in Iran” Sunday, November 22nd 2015 at Proctor’s GE Theatre in Schenectady, NY

Upstate New York-based Festival Cinema Invisible (FCI) continues its monthly series “Pathways to Iran” which explores Persian Culture through film and dialog with a live musical performance, film screening and a panel discussion at Proctor’s GE Theatre on Sunday, November 22nd at 4pm.
The event will begin with a performance / demonstration of international instrumental music from capital region group, KoriSoron. The evening will also provide a rare screening of two short documentaries by director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb that share common themes of music and censorship in Iran.

"Back Vocal” (Sedaye Dovom - 40 mins.) explores the prohibition of female solo singing in Iran, and tells the story of female vocalists struggling to be heard 24 years after the Islamic Revolution.

In “Off Beat” (Saze Mokhalef - 45 mins.), a group of fans hold an internet contest for underground rock bands in response to restrictions on performing rock music in Iran.

Following the screening, Farzad Golpayegani, who is featured in this documentary, will be present at the theater as part of a Q & A panel to discuss his experience in the film.  The discussion will also include a Skype call from Iran with Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, the director of both films and a Skype phone conversation with Mark Levine, the author of the celebrated book, “Heavy Metal Islam”.

Persian style tea and sweets are also included in the $10 admission. Tickets are available at the Proctor's Box Office or on the Proctor’s website at:

The FCI series will culminate in a three-day festival of Persian language film at Proctor’s GE Theatre on the weekend of April 1st 2016.  FCI President Mahmood Karimi-Hakak said, “What’s unique about FCI is that most of the films are not only world and US premiers, but most have never been screened officially in their home countries.” The previous FCI Festivals ran in 2014 and 2015 and featured over 70 Iranian films that were either world premiers, national premiers or regional premiers.
