Starbucks delays release of calorie info [03/29/2008]

Starbucks delays release of calorie info

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The Starbucks coffee house chain has decided not to release information about the calorie levels of its products next week in New York as planned.

While Starbucks officials initially had said they would give out the calorie data ahead of an upcoming New York Health Department rule, they subsequently released a statement saying the information will not be released until the new regulation goes into effect April 15, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

"Starbucks will be fully compliant with the regulation when it goes into effect," the company said Friday.

The city regulation will require all New York restaurants to reveal the calorie levels of all menu items.

When the regulation was first set to go into effect last year, the restaurant industry opposed it and a technicality caused it to be struck down in the courts.

Industry officials filed another lawsuit this year when the altered measure was passed by city officials and it currently is pending a decision in the courts, the newspaper said.
